Is there anything better than pizza? We know the grill is a pizza’s best friend! Save yourself some dough (pun intended), and achieve the perfect pizza at home in your backyard! Here’s how to grill a great pizza:

Pizza is Best Grilled

Pizza thrives on heat. You can get the cheese melted and the crust into its bubbly and blistered shape.  Since a grill generates more heat than most home ovens, you will get closer to the intense heat created by a professional pizza oven. Without a doubt, we believe grilling pizza is best.

Pizza & The Stone

We recommend you take it up a notch by using a ceramic pizza stone on the grill, letting it get crazy hot, and using it as the platform for your grilled pizza

A pizza stone harnesses and evens out all the intense heat, similar to the floor of a professional pizza oven. This means you can simply throw down the dough, top it, close the lid, and voilá…pizza heaven! Bonus…no flipping required!

Grilled pizza is a family favorite and you can make one big pie or several personal pizzas that each member of your family can put their own toppings on! We can help you pick the perfect grill or outdoor pizza oven to make your outdoor living area your new favorite pizza place! Pizza Grilling Methods

Great pizza on the grill isn’t a science; it’s more of an art. Because everyone’s grill is different, expect to experience quite a bit of trial and error before you reach pizza perfection. Don’t worry it will always turn out delicious.

Here are tips to get you started

Grilling Pizza on a Gas Grill

We love using gas grills for pizza simply because of the even heat it generates. Simply place a pizza stone on the gratesset the burners to medium-high, and cover

When the grill reaches 500 degrees (after about 10 minutes)

  • remove the lid,
  • place the dough (8 ounces of fresh pizza dough stretched to a 12” to 14” oval) on the stone,
  • add your toppings,
  • and brush the crust with olive oil.

Keep the vents open and cook until the underside of the crust is browned and the cheese is bubbling (about 7 to 9 minutes). Using a pizza spatula, transfer the pizza to a large cutting board. Let it cool for a few minutes, slice, and enjoy!

Cooking Pizza on a Charcoal Grill/ Smoker

The setup may be different, but the grilling method is basically much the same. Once the charcoal is hot

  • spread the coals in a ring around the perimeter of the grill and set the grate on top.
  • when the coals are glowing but not flaming, place the pizza stone on the grate, cover, and preheat for 20 minutes.

Proceed with the same steps as listed above to grill the perfect pizza!

Grilling Pizza Straight on the Grates:

No pizza stone? No problem!

Just prepare the grill for medium-high, indirect heat (for a charcoal grill, bank coals on one side of the grill; for a gas grill, leave one or two burners off).

  • Place the pizza dough over direct heat just long enough to create grill marks and stiffen the dough (about 45 seconds).
  • Flip the dough and cook over direct heat for another 45 seconds.
  • Slide the dough over to the cooler part of the grill and add your toppings.
  • Cover the grill and cook, making sure to rotate halfway through the cooking process.
  • Grill until the crust is browned and the cheese is melted (about 7 to 9 minutes).
